January Project of the Month

Our "Project of the Month" is George!

The story of George

George was born in a colony in South Beach, Oregon. He quickly grew into a neighborhood favorite with his quiet, friendly demeanor, and his gentle handling of colony conflict. He was a leader among cats, protecting the young, many of which we are sure he fathered. A kindly veteran, we'll call him by his nickname, "Grizz", took George into his home, when George wanted the warmth and company of a human domicile. George learned to love the elder man, and would spend the winter on his warm lap, enjoying his quiet company. As George aged, Grizz wanted to control the growth of the colony in his neighborhood and noticed that George's health was declining, so he contacted the Oregon Coast Small Animal Rescue. We were honored to have the opportunity to serve a veteran and his beloved pet, and George was in need of help! He was suffering from an upper respiratory infection that was affecting his ability to eat. He was losing a significant amount of weight, and his eyes were sealed shut. A few weeks of isolation in a warm cage with high-protein foods brought George's weight back up, and allowed his body to fight off the respiratory infection. A steady regimen of Terramycin began to solve to issues with his eyes, but he continued to squint. He went to Lincoln City Animal Clinic and got neutered, and was returned to his loving home with extra Terramycin to continue treating his eyes. Fast forward almost a full year from that first encounter, to December 2022. We learned the Grizz passed away. His granddaughter asked if we could take George back, as we were the only other people George had ever known, and his eyes were still causing him issues. A closer look revealed that all infection was gone, but his lower eyelashes were actually growing inward toward his eyes. This is called "Entropion", and is a painful, irritating condition. On Monday, January 16, 2023, George went back to LCAC, where he was officially diagnosed, and his appointment for surgery was set for tomorrow, Monday, January 23, 2023! George has had a long journey to recover from a condition that he was likely born with. He is about 5 years old at this point, and has never known a day without discomfort. He has never seen the world clearly without pain, and yet, remains sweet and affectionate. One can only imagine how his spirit will blossom once his pain is relieved!
